Ph.D. Position in Operation of Personalized Comfort Systems

Mission

We seek an exceptionally driven and skilled Ph.D. candidate to contribute to cutting-edge research on the operation of personalized environmental control systems (PECS) and their contribution to energy reduction in buildings.

Main duties and responsibilities

The primary focus of the research is to develop methods for controlling the operation of various thermal PECS, such as heated and cooled desks, chairs, and partition walls. The optimized operation of PECS should balance the personalized thermal comfort of individuals while minimizing overall building energy use. An important aspect of the project is to incorporate the behavior of building occupants, as well as the thermal inertia of the building and its thermal system, ensuring that the control strategies are adaptable for real-world use and human variability.
The successful candidate will join the Smart Living Lab (SLL) in Fribourg, Switzerland, which encompasses the ICE lab. SLL is an inter-institutional research and development center dedicated to the well-being of users, energy efficiency, and the digital transformation of the built environment.
