Research collaborator

Profile

The Structural Xploration Lab is seeking a new research collaborator with practical experience in structural engineering related to concrete buildings.

Candidates must hold a master's degree in civil engineering and have at least three years of professional experience.

A PhD is not required, but an interest in performing structural design in a research setting is expected.

The employment rate will range between 40% and 100% and may evolve over time, depending on the candidate’s availability. This is a one-year contract, renewable. Earliest start date is April 15th or as soon as possible.

Missions

Depending on the employment rate, the candidate will work on various projects, all in collaboration with SXL researchers and foreign building experts and professionals.

The main project consists of the structural assessment of concrete slabs in damaged buildings in the Kiev oblast and the engineering required for their deconstruction with a view to their reuse in new housing in Ukraine. This project is supported by EPFL Tech4Dev and carried out in collaboration with a humanitarian architecture firm and local contractors in the Kiev oblast.

In addition to this project and depending on the employment rate, the candidate may also contribute to an EU Horizon project whose tasks include assessing the load-bearing capacity of a selection of typical low-rise residential buildings in Europe and structurally optimising a new façade system, in collaboration with foreign industrial and research partners.

The candidate may also contribute to various teaching activities and the supervision of civil engineering students at bachelor's and master's level.
