AI Engineer for Educational Assessment & Feedback

About the position

Traditional evaluation and assessment practices in higher education are being transformed by artificial intelligence. At EPFL, we are developing AI-powered tools that support instructors in evaluating student work while enabling students to receive timely, personalized feedback at scale.

We are seeking an AI Engineer for Educational Assessment & Feedback to design, develop, and deploy AI systems that enhance how we assess learning. Working with Large Language Models hosted on EPFL's secure infrastructure, you'll create innovative solutions to assist grading hand-written exams, evaluating project work, and providing automated feedback.

 

Our infrastructure includes:

  • Graph AI Platform: Knowledge graph, semantic search, and RAG construction

  • RCP Computational Infrastructure: GPU clusters, local LLMs, specialized AI services

  • Intelligent Agents Framework: Orchestration layer for chatbots and AI applications

  • Production Applications: 20+ AI tutors and chatbots, analytics tools, search engines

You'll extend this ecosystem specifically for assessment and feedback use cases, ensuring educational data remains secure while providing powerful evaluation capabilities to instructors.

Mission

You will develop AI applications that transform assessment practices at EPFL. You'll build tools that help instructors adopt alternative assessment methods and provide richer feedback. Your work will directly contribute to deeper learning, authentic evaluation, and challenge-based education.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. AI-Assisted Grading Systems (60%)

Traditional Hand-Written Exams

  • Implement pre-processing to speed up grading while maintaining instructor control

  • Enable more complex hand-written responses beyond multiple-choice questions

Quality & Reliability

  • Minimize biases in grading suggestions across student populations

  • Implement confidence scoring and human-in-the-loop validation

Authentic Evaluation Support

  • Design systems that transform project reports into personalized exams

  • Generate exam questions based on student work and learning objectives

  • Develop tools to help instructors create rubrics and evaluation criteria

2. Personalized Feedback Systems (40%)

  • Extend grading technologies to provide direct feedback to students

  • Integrate with Exoset (exercise repository) for automated hints and guidance

  • Connect with chatbot infrastructure for conversational feedback

Profile

Education & Experience

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, or related field

  • 2-3 years of professional experience in ML/AI application development

  • Strong background in Large Language Models

Technical Skills

  • Expert in Python programming and ML frameworks

  • LLM application development: RAG systems, prompt engineering, fine-tuning

  • Computer Vision/OCR: Experience with handwriting recognition or document processing

  • API development and data engineering experience

  • Familiarity with vector databases and semantic search

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in educational technology or learning analytics

  • Knowledge of educational assessment theory and practices

  • Background in AI ethics and responsible AI development
