Audio Engineer - Immersive Audio Systems

Mission

We are recruiting an Audio Engineer specialized in immersive audio systems to join the Laboratory for Experimental Museology (eM+) development team. eM+ is a transdisciplinary initiative at the intersection of immersive visualization technologies, aesthetics, and cultural and scientific (big) data. eM+ engages in research from scientific, artistic, and humanistic perspectives and promotes multisensory engagement using experimental platforms. You will join this dynamic team to deliver exceptional installations and exhibitions, in museums and galleries, worldwide.

As an audio engineer, you will participate in the design of systems and installations supporting high-quality and innovative audio experiences. You will develop critical components for spatial audio processing and manipulation for our ultra-high resolution stereographic visualization systems. As one of the main tasks, you will participate in the core audio engine development for the creation of both simulated and real-world audio environments through the development of critical components and interfacing with different internal or external technology blocks.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Development of Audio Architecture: Contribute to the design and implementation of the audio system architecture for immersive installations.
  • Real-Time Audio Optimization: Optimize audio processing for real-time interactive experiences, ensuring high fidelity and low latency.
  • Audio Interfaces and Integration: Assist in developing and integrating audio interfaces with hardware sensors and other system components.
  • Spatial Audio Systems: Support the design and implementation of spatial audio systems, including ambisonics and binaural audio technologies.
  • Scientific Audio Design: Develop audio components and elements derived from scientific data to enhance immersive experiences.
  • Custom Software and Hardware Development: Help create custom software and hardware solutions to support unique audio installation requirements.
  • Collaboration and Support: Work closely with interdisciplinary teams to support audio requirements for various projects, courses, and workshops.

Profile

You have a passion for immersive audio technologies and an interest in learning and developing new skills in a small and dynamic team.

You must have:

  • Expertise in Audio Engineering: Proficient in audio programming and production tools such as Max/MSP, Pure Data, Supercollider, and Reaper.
  • Experience with Spatial Audio: Knowledge of ambisonic authoring/composition tools (ICST, Spat, IEM, Facebook 360 Spatial Workstation, etc.).
  • Programming Skills: Programming skills, especially in Python, and experience with hardware platforms like Arduino, ESP32, Teensy, Raspberry Pi, and Bela.
  • Software Development: Proficiency in software development for audio systems, including integration of OSC, MIDI, and serial communication protocols.
  • Experience or interest with realtime 3D graphics : especially Unreal Engine.
  • Scientific Audio Design: Experience in creating audio elements derived from scientific data.
  • Team Spirit: Open-minded, with the ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Interest in Immersive Audio: A strong interest in the development of interactive and immersive audio systems for public engagement.
  • Fluency in English.

Would be nice to have:

  • Experience with Immersive Systems: Experience in the development of immersive systems and spatial audio rendering.
  • Knowledge of 3D Audio and Haptics: Expertise in 3D audio, shader language, rendering pipeline, and haptic feedback systems.
  • Familiarity with UX and Natural Interaction Design: Affinity with user experience design and natural interaction for public exhibitions.
  • Computer Vision and Real-Time Video Analysis: Experience with computer vision and real-time high-resolution video analysis and streaming.

We Offer:

  • A unique framework at the forefront of innovation in visualization and immersive audio experiences.
