Green Labs Project Manager

Main duties and responsibilities

Context – General aim of the position:

Within EPFL Sustainability, part of the Vice-Presidency for Research and Strategic Initiatives, your role will be to work with laboratories, centers and platforms to assess and reduce their environmental footprint without compromising the quality of researches.

You will liaise with various EPFL Vice-Presidencies and Faculties, and will be required to:

 

Green Labs Strategy

  • On behalf of the head department, support, monitor and ensure the planning and implementation of the Green Labs part for the Climate and Sustainability Strategy
  • Support laboratories, centers and platforms in reducing their environmental impact
  • Participate in defining targets by laboratory type
  • Define and propose a funding plan to support laboratories and platforms in rolling out reduction measures: the question of a dedicated fund arises
  • Participate in national and international working groups

Mission

Support for laboratoires

  • Carrying out carbon assessments of research activities for laboratories, centers and platforms
  • Analysing energy and resource consumption
  • Raise awareness among research teams
  • Implementing certifications such as LEAF, Sparhub or My Green Lab
  • Advising on best practices, particularly regarding energy, procurement, travel, waste (including plastic), etc.
  • Develop roadmaps and actions planes

 

Communication & engagement

  • Support communication relating to the roll-out of EPFL’s research activity quantification tool, the CO2Calculator
  • Participate in and/or organize, on behalf of the head department, Green Labs team coordination meetings
  • Organise workshops and events
  • Create educational materials
  • Maintain and develop the website
  • Promote the laboratories’ initiatives
  • Develop a culture of sustainable research

Profile

Required experience

  • Master’s or PhD level university education, or a degree from a University of Applied Sciences (HES) in engineering, environmental sciences, data analysis, digital sciences or equivalent
  • 5 years’ minimum experience in methods for monitoring and accounting for GHG emissions
  • 5 years’ minimum experience in managing cross-functional projects

 

Required skills

  • Proficiency in the principles of carbon emissions accounting (e.g. GHG Protocol)
  • Knowledge of methods, tools and standards for quantifying environmental footprints, such as life cycle assessment
  • Strong interest in sustainability and reducing the environmental footprint
  • Experience with ACV software such as SimaPro is an advantage
  • Proven knowledge of the academic world
  • Language skills: French and English essential
  • Analytical and summarising skills, strong writing ability
  • Ability to work across departments
  • Demonstrate independence, proactivity and the ability to generate ideas
  • Ethics and scientific integrity
