ICP Systems Engineer
Mission
The Integrated Computing Platform (ICP) provides advanced IT infrastructure and services to support EPFL’s community. We are looking for a System Engineer to strengthen our team and help design, deliver, and evolve our service portfolio, namely with regards to sensitive data needs.

You will contribute to a diverse range of services, including compute, storage, and AI platforms, while working closely with researchers and IT teams across EPFL.

Main duties and responsibilities
- Contribute to the design, implementation and support of a Trusted Research Environment infrastructure
- Contribute to the maintenance, support, and continuous improvement of our service offerings
- Design, implement, and deploy new services aligned with research and institutional needs
- Collaborate with IT support teams and end users, ensuring high-quality communication and service delivery
- Participate in automation, optimization, and modernization of infrastructure and workflows
- Support the reliability, scalability, and security of the platform services
Profile
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent experience)
- Strong team player with a structured, reliable, and proactive mindset
- Adaptability and agility in a dynamic environment, with a pragmatic approach to problem-solving
- Excellent communication skills and ability to understand user needs and business challenges
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Interest in working in a multicultural and research-driven environment
- Fluent in French and English (written and spoken)
Required technical skills:
- Strong knowledge of Linux system administration in production (Ubuntu, Red Hat)
- Experience with container technologies (Docker, Podman, containerd)
- Experience operating container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes)
- Experience deploying applications in cloud-native environments (e.g., Helm, Terraform)
- Experience with on-premises infrastructure (servers, networking, storage in datacenter environments)
- Experience with IT Security best practices and principles
- Knowledge of core IT services: DNS, DHCP, load balancing (HAProxy), Keepalived, TLS
- Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet)
- Familiarity with DevOps/GitOps practices and CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI/CD, FluxCD)
- Experience operating open-source-based services
- Proficiency in scripting and programming (Python, Bash, Git)
We count as an advantage your possible experience with (optional technical skills):
- Experience with Sensitive Data environments (Trusted Research Environment)
- Experience with virtualization platforms (OpenStack)
- Experience with identity and access management systems (Keycloak, Authentik)
- CNCF certifications (e.g., CKA, CKAD)
- Experience with storage systems, filesystems, and data archiving
