Mathematics Outreach officer
Mission
The EPFL Mathematics Institute is seeking to fill a new position dedicated to leading our department's community and outreach efforts. The individual appointed to this role, known as the Mathematics Outreach Officer, will be in charge of planning, developing, and overseeing activities aimed at enhancing community engagement and outreach.
Working closely with faculty, staff, and students, the Mathematics Outreach Officer will encourage high school students in engaging in STEM and advocate for students from underrepresented minorities and socially or economically disadvantaged groups.
Our outreach initiatives are instrumental in sparking interest in mathematical careers among young people, thus contributing to a deeper societal understanding of contemporary challenges.
Main duties and responsibilities
• Promotion of mathematics. Manage the development and promotion activities of Mathematics; assist the Institute Director in all aspects of communication of the Institute of Mathematics; explore funding options, such as outreach funds from grants external to the institution.
• Outreach activities. Develop, plan, coordinate and organize activities for schools, high schools and the general public (Summer school, Matheminecraft workshops...), sometimes in collaboration with other EPFL centers (SPE, SPS, Bernoulli).
• Social networks. Supervision of the development and maintenance of websites and social media (EPFL web, Instagram, Twitter, etc.), in collaboration with Mediacom for writing articles.
• Teaching. Teach service courses (Analysis or Linear Algebra) ex cathedra in French or English for approximately 2 hours/week (annual average); preparation and supervision of exercises for the courses taught; preparation, supervision and correction of exams related to the courses taught, coordination with other teachers.
Profile
- Experience and motivation in outreach activities.
- Familiarity with Swiss education system and Swiss culture.
- PhD degree in Mathematics or related field.
- Teaching experience.
- Fluency in French and English (C1) and good knowledge of German (B2).
- knowledge of computer programming, image and video editing programs, math (video) games
