EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs more than 6,500 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 18,500 people, including over 14,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

Postdoc or Senior Scientist position in 4D STEM in Cryo-EM

Mission

We are looking for a PostDoc or Senior Scientist to join our team to explore new approaches in diffractive imaging for high-resolution cryo-Electron Microscopy.

Main duties and responsibilities

We explore diffractive electron imaging technologies such as 4D-STEM with ptychography or other reconstruction algorithms to improve resolution and contrast in cryo-EM. The target is high-resolution sub-volume averaging from cryo-electron tomography data, collected by 4D-STEM. We develop this on a custom-tailored 300kV Titan Krios that is equipped with a cold-FEG, an RF cavity for GHz pulsing of stroboscopic single electrons, a Cs probe aberration corrector before the sample, autoloader and CETA/Falcon4i, and followed by DECTRIS ARINA hybrid pixel electron detection operated at 120’000 frames per second. This system is controlled by a TVIPS USG and operated under home-built software. Details are described at https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-52403-5 .

Profile

Candidates should have experience in electron microscopy, software development and data processing algorithms. A background in physics, biology or related disciplines is suitable.

We offer

The EPFL ranks among the world's top scientific universities. Lausanne is a beautiful, vibrant and highly international city on the shores of the scenic Lake Geneva, situated within an Alpine setting in the heart of Europe. English is the main language at the EPFL and in our laboratory, while Lausasnne is in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The position comes with a competitive salary.

EPFL is committed to being an equal opportunity employer. The successful candidate will join a collaborative, international, and diverse research team with interdisciplinary expertise in biology, physics, computer science and engineering. The focus of research at our Laboratory of Biological Electron Microscopy (LBEM) in the physics department of the EPFL, is on neurodegeneration and method development in croy-EM. We enjoy unique state-of-the-art instrumentation. More information about our research group can be found at https://lbem.ch.
