Postdoctoral position in History and Theory of Architecture

Mission

The lab THEMA within the Institute of Architecture at EPFL has an open position for a postdoctoral position to commence on or before January 2025. THEMA is led by Prof Dr Sarah Nichols and studies the conditions of architectural production in the past and today with a particular focus on building materials. The postdoctoral fellow will have the space to independently develop a project within the remit of the lab’s mission while contributing to ongoing projects and gaining experience in undergraduate teaching. Fellows will be supported with excellent research facilities and resources for conference presentations, journal publications, and research travel for archival or field work. The position will be a minimum of 1.5-2 years with the possibility to extend. The position is intended at 70% with some flexibility depending on the profile of the candidate (minimum 50% up to 100%).

 

 

Profile

We are seeking scholars with a background in the history of architecture or a related field. Suitable candidates hold a PhD in a relevant subject or are planning to defend before the end of 2024. We are particularly keen on hearing from candidates with an interest in production studies and/or building materials and construction, familiarity with archival research, and with excellent written English. Additional language fluency and familiarity with research geographies beyond Western Europe and North America are particularly useful.
