EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs more than 6,500 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 17,000 people, including over 12,500 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

Technician of PLD instrument

Mission

The Laboratory for in situ characterisation with electrons (INE) at the Institute of Materials (IMX) at EPFL is seeking to hire technical support staff to maintain and use for research purposes a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) instrument located at IMX. The person will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the PLD, and will be in close contact with the company (Surface Systems and Technology, Germany). They will strongly collaborate with PhD students and other collaborators on the deposition of complex films on special substrates, with the possibility of actively participating in the laboratory’s research.

Responsabilities

  • Maintain and be responsible for upgrading a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) system equipped with XPS and RHEED in collaboration with the company engineers
  • Operate the PLD and prepare complex oxide films in specialised MEMS chip substrates
  • Prepare MEMS chips using conventional microfabrication techniques in the cleanroom
  • Work closely with the lab members to prepare the chips and films
  • Train lab members in the use of the PLD as required
  • Participate in group meetings and assist with experimental design
  • Maintain clear, detailed records of the operation of the PLD and all experimental procedures (possibly integrated into electronic notebooks)

Profile

  • Strong background in UHV systems and deposition equipment
  • Experience in cleanroom facilities is recommended
  • A Master or PhD degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline is an advantage but not required
  • A good command of written and spoken English to accommodate interactions with all members of the laboratory and EPFL staff
  • Experience with electron microscopes would also be an advantage to enable independent research within the laboratory

We offer

  • Attractive working conditions
  • A friendly and stimulating environment
  • The opportunity to participate in various research projects
  • The opportunity to lead their own research project
