EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs more than 6,500 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 18,500 people, including over 14,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

Whole wood concept in teaching and research Architectural Assistant position

Mission

If you are interested in research and teaching in timber architecture and construction, computational automated design processes, innovative territorial and logistic approaches combined with digital fabrication, join us at the Laboratory for Timber Constructions IBOIS of EPFL!

Our research aims at empowering architects through the application of IBOIS’ whole wood concept. We develop new hybrid construction systems and logistics combined with digital fabrication technologies.
Architectural thinking, parametric designs methodologies are key ingredients in our work. We pursue a holistic approach in that we design buildings through technology transfer scenarios and collaborate with industry partners to validate and inspire our research.

ENAC covers construction in natural and architectural environments from its mathematical foundations to systems, platforms, and interdisciplinary applications. With a rich intellectual environment, a working culture and resources only matched by the highest-rated academic institutions, and geographically located in the breathtaking Lake Geneva region, our program targets training bright minds to be the research and industrial leaders of the construction technology revolution. We have an award-winning and internationally recognized faculty targeting broad research areas and working closely with top international research organizations. We have a strong track record of employment and placement on a global scale whether it is R&D in industry or academia, and many of our students are leaders and founders of startups. Our students are among the best represented at flagship conferences and compete for and are recognized internationally by prestigious industrial PhD fellowships and awards. We have a large consortium of industrial affiliates with whom many of our students collaborate closely during internships.

At IBOIS, we aim to identify key leverage points in the value chain to scale wood construction and to deliver environmentally optimal wood use scenarios. We will apply environmental, economic, technical, societal, research across the wood value chain to construct the inter-dependent systems understanding that is required for transformative change across the wood construction supply chain. We would like to enable us to collectively explore options for contributing to net-zero emissions by transitioning to timber hybrid construction.
