PhD position on battery thermal runaway

Mission

Your mission is to investigate innovative solutions to identify and potentially avoid thermal runaway conditions in Lithium-ion batteries. You will create and validate new concepts, design model-based or data-driven battery models and state estimators and integrate them into innovative battery management systems (BMS). These activities will be carried out in close collaboration with our project partner from the CSEM Battery Innovation Hub, where you will closely work together with the CSEM algorithm and BMS engineers. We expect you to work in an autonomous manner and with an affinity to investigate solutions that have the potential to be transferred to the industry.

Profile

We expect

  • An excellent MsC degree, preferably in electronchemistry, electrical engineering, energy or related fields
  • Knowledge of Lithium-ion battery technologies and associated behavior, e.g. degradation and safety
  • Experience in thermal and electrical modelling and simulation of electrochemical storage systems
  • Proven experience in Python/C programming and software development tools (e.g. GitHub, etc.)
  • Highly motivated, eager to learn and with a strong sense of ownership
  • Professional proficiency in English (oral and written)

Main duties and responsibilities

As a PhD Student, you will be expected to:

  • Have full responsibility for your own dissertation
  • Research in close collaboration with industry partners
  • Experiment design and execution
  • Analyze and interpret experimental results
  • Write scientific articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Present at international conferences
  • Supervise student projects and basic administrative support
  • Contribute to teaching

We offer

The cooperation between EPFL PV-Lab and the CSEM Battery Innovation Hub is at the forefront in the field of battery management systems design and implementation. We offer an inspiring development environment with a highly motivated team and top-notch laboratory infrastructures for battery testing and system validation.

The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge research and development in a truly unique internation and mixed academic-industrial environment. We offer a full-time 4 year research appointment with a possible permanent job opportunity at CSEM at the end of the PhD.
